Mortal Kombat 1
Kung Lao is a former member of the White Lotus Society. He is named after and is the last know descendant of the Great Kung Lao who was killed by Goro 500 years ago, but unlike his ancestor, he does not desire to be champion of Mortal Kombat. He has trained with master Bo' Rai Cho, and is a good friend of Liu Kang. Kung Lao's most defining characteristic is his trademark razor-rimmed hat.
Kung Lao first made his appearance in Mortal Kombat II, however, he was originally chosen by the Order of Light to represent Earthrealm in the first Mortal Kombat game. After declining, Liu Kang was chosen. After Liu Kang's victory, Shao Kahn sent Tarkatan hordes into Earthrealm to attack the shaolin temples. Kung Lao and Liu Kang successfully defended the temples and agreed to travel to Outworld to avenge their fallen brothers and defeat Shao Kahn in Outworld. Once Shao Kahn was defeated, Kung Lao planned to rebuild the White Lotus Society and train a new generation of shaolin warriors.
However, during Shao Kahn's invasion of Earthrealm(Mortal Kombat 3), Kung Lao put his plans on hold and joined his fellow Earthrealm warriors. He eventually challenged Shao Kahn, but the emperor was too powerful. He defeated Kung Lao so badly that he was believed to be dead. Enraged, Liu Kang challenged Shao Kahn and defeated him for a second time. After Outworld's forces were driven out of Earthrealm, Kung Lao, surviving his defeat, decided to allow everyone to believe he was dead and went on to live a life of peace.
However, his life of peace would not last long. Learning that Goro was still alive, he joined his fellow Earthrealm warriors to help defend Edenia against Shinnok and his Army of Darkness(Mortal Kombat 4/Gold). After Shinnok's defeat, Kung Lao attacked Goro, not knowing of the newly formed alliance between Kitana and the Shokan. Kitana quickly reasoned with Kung Lao and Goro, and the two ended their feud.
For years, Kung Lao was able to live the life of peace he so much desired, until he one day found the dead body of Liu Kang at the Wu Shi Academy. Informed by Raiden that Shang Tsung was responsible and had formed an alliance with Quan Chi, Kung Lao decided to once again abandon his life of peace and vowed revenge upon the sorcerer. Believing his skills insufficient, he sought training from master Bo' Rai Cho. After training for a short time, the two joined Raiden and the other Earthrealm warriors in an assault on the two sorcerers.
The assault did not go as planned. Without Liu Kang, Raiden and the Earthrealm warriors were unable to defeat the Deadly Alliance. Kung Lao faced off against Shang Tsung, but due to the Soulnado in his palace, the sorcerer was able to constantly replenish his health. Kung Lao eventually was killed by Shang Tsung, and one by one, the other Earthrealm warriors were killed by the two sorcerers. However, during the events of Mortal Kombat: Deception, Onaga resurrected Kung Lao and the other Earthrealm warriors and made them his slaves. Ermac and Liu Kang's spirit are eventually able to defeat the Dragon King, thus ending his control over Kung Lao and the others.
During the events of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Kung Lao joins forces with Fujin, the God of wind, to help bring Raiden and Liu Kang's corpse under control. The corrupted, more ruthless Raiden had taken control of Liu Kang's corpse and was using it as a tool to slay all those who put Earthrealm at risk. In Fujin's Armageddon bio, it says the two agree that if they cannot stop Raiden and Liu Kang's corpse, they will be forced to finish them both.
In Kung Lao's Mortal Kombat: Armageddon bio, it states that after defeating Blaze, he travels back in time to meet his ancestor, the Great Kung Lao. With his blessing, Kung Lao takes his place in the Mortal Kombat tournament and defeats Goro, thus becoming champion. As a result, history is forever altered. Shao Kahn's threats never come to be, and Liu Kang never becomes champion of Mortal Kombat.

Mortal Kombat II

A former Shaolin Monk and a member of the White Lotus society, he is the last descendant of the Great Kung Lao who was defeated by Goro 500 years ago. Realizing the danger of the Outworld menace he joins Liu Kang in entering Shao Kahn's contest.
Mortal Kombat 3

Kung Lao's plan to reform the White Lotus Society comes to a halt when Shao Kahn's invasion takes the Earth by storm. As a chosen warrior, Kung Lao must use his greatest fighting skills to bring down Shao Kahn's reign of terror.
Mortal Kombat Gold

Many believed that Kung Lao had died from injuries suffered during the final fight against Shao Kahn. In fact he had merely turned to a new life without violence in reverence to his ancestral beliefs. As news of Shinnok's threat reaches Kung Lao together with the apparent return of Goro, Kung Lao returns once more to challenge his ancestor's killer.
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance

Kung Lao was the first to find the body of his friend and fellow shaolin monk Liu Kang. He later discovered that it was in fact Shang Tsung who had dealt the fatal blow. Enraged, Kung Lao abandoned his Shaolin beliefs and vowed revenge against the sorcerer. He knew that his fighting skill would not be sufficient to best Shang Tsung. He would need training from the same Outworld master who had taught Liu Kang the one special attack he needed to win the Mortal Kombat tournament so many years ago.
Kung Lao traveled to Outworld and informed the martial arts master, Bo' Rai Cho, of Liu Kang's death at the hands of the sorcerer Shang Tsung. Devastated by the news, the old master agreed to teach Kung Lao the flying kick Liu Kang had used to defeat Shang Tsung a decade ago. The training was intense, but Bo' Rai Cho was determined to give Kung Lao a greater edge than he had given Liu Kang. Once Kung Lao had mastered the 'Whirlwind Kick', both he and Bo' Rai Cho journeyed across Outworld to deal with the sorcerer Shang Tsung.
Mortal Kombat (2011)

Kung Lao's ancestor was defeated by Goro 500 years ago in the pivotal match that saw Shang Tsung attain control of the Mortal Kombat tournament. To him this contest is about more than Earthrealm's freedom. His life's goal has been to slay Goro and win the tournament, thus restoring his family's honor. After being defeated by Liu Kang in a qualifying bout, he disguised himself as one of Shang Tsung's guards to gain admittance. Kung Lao believes he is ready for the challenge. The time to avenge his ancestor is at hand.
Mortal Kombat X

Kung Lao trained with the Shaolin Monks to become one of Earthrealm's most skilled defenders. But his immaturity and impetuousness prevented him from being taken as seriously as his friend Liu Kang. Despite Lao's shortcomings, he was able to defeat both Shang Tsung and Quan Chi in Mortal Kombat. But his life was cut short when Shao Kahn brutally murdered him. In death, Kung Lao's soul was collected by Quan Chi, who used it to create and evil "revenant" version of Kung Lao. He now serves Quan Chi and the Netherrealm.
Mortal Kombat 11

Shaolin monk and descendant of Great Kung Lao. The younger Kung Lao claimed his greatness by beating the deadly alliance of Shang Tsung and Quan Chi in Mortal Kombat. Reckless and rebellious, but courageous and indomitable, Kung Lao fights to prove worthy of his glorious ancestors.
Mortal Kombat 1

Born and raised in the village of Fengjian, Kung Lao has spent his life toiling in the fields. It has been an honorable life, if not a glorious one.
Kung Lao's greatest fear is that his life will amount to nothing. He prays fervently that he will be called to do something bigger.
His prayers are answered when he is asked to join the champions of Earthrealm. As a warrior fighting for its honor, Kung Lao knows that his victories will be long remembered.
Mortal Kombat II

A former shaolin monk alongside Liu Kang, Kung Lao also grieves the loss of their shaolin brothers.
He realizes that his ultimate fate lies within the dark realm of the Outworld. He defeats his Outworld opponents until he emerges the supreme champion.
With his strength and spirit in complete alignment he finally avenges the death of his great ancestor. Although his greatest challenges lie ahead.
Mortal Kombat 3

When Kahn invades Earth, Kung Lao must scrap his plans of reuniting the White Lotus Society. He instead must focus on the new tournament. He seeks Liu Kang and together they battle Kahn's forces fearlessly.
Using the knowledge he obtained as a shaolin monk, he fights in the name of his great ancestor - the original Kung Lao. He emerges victorious but suffers from injuries during battle with Kahn. Believed to have passed away, Kung Lao joins his ancestor in a new life.
Mortal Kombat Gold

Kitana: Goro... we are here to offer the Shokan a treaty for truce. The Centaurs have already signed and agreed to all terms. We now await your acceptance.
Goro: War has been waged in this realm for too long. We must bring it to an end. I will set aside my differences with the Centars, as long as they abide by the treaty. I shall sign your agreement.
Kitana: Goro, this ia a great victory. For all of us.
Goro: AARGGHHHHH!!!
Kitana: Kung Lao!? We are at a moment of peace, how could you attack now!?
Kung Lao: I once thought that an allegiance with an enemy was a lost cause Princess Kitana.
Goro: Was that your attempt at an assassination, Earthman!
Kung Lao: No, that was a ceremonial strike of revenge for my ancestor you killed in Mortal Kombat so many years ago.
Goro: And do you wish to continue this battle?
Kung Lao: No, I wish only to settle the differences between us.
Goro: Your ancestor was a great man and a brave and noble warrior. You should be proud of his accomplishments. If he won, perhaps it would be my own son, seeking to settle differences with him.
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance

Rage fueled Kung Lao's thirst for revenge. The memory of holding his fellow monk's broken body on the lei tai of the Wu Shi Academy grounds consumed him as he rained blow after blow down upon Shang Tsung. Kung Lao had finally mastered the attack Bo' Rai Cho had taught him. The sorcerer could not withstand his whirlwind assault. Shang Tsung begged for mercy. Kung Lao granted him none.
Upon his return to Earthrealm, Kung Lao stood before the modest shrine to Liu Kang which had been erected by the Wu Shi initiates during his absence in Outworld. He lit a stick of incense and placed it among the others already burning there. He bowed his head and prayed for safe passage to the afterlife for his friend and brother. With Shang Tsung's death, Liu Kang's spirit could rest peacefully. Earthrealm was safe once more, but at terrible cost. The work of the White Lotus society had become more important than ever.
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon

The power released by his victory over Blaze opened a portal, and Kung Lao found himself in Earthrealm hundreds of years in the past. His ancestor allowed him to enter the Mortal Kombat tournament in his stead. Kung Lao defeated Goro and won the tournament, becoming a legend. As a result, Liu Kang never competed and Kung Lao's rivalry with him never came to be.
Mortal Kombat (2011)

Kung Lao had avenged his ancestor's death and saved Earthrealm from Shao Kahn's brutality. In quiet reflection with Raiden at the grave of the Great Kung Lao, he touched the modest stone marker. Images of past events, moments of someone else's life, flashed through his mind, concluding with a lost battle against Goro. Raiden theorized that Kung Lao had unlocked memories of his past life. The Kung Lao that stood before Raiden was in fact the reincarnation of the Great Kung Lao, who had been defeated by Goro 500 years ago. He had accomplished in the present what he could not in the past.
Mortal Kombat X

After Shinnok's defeat, Kung Lao found himself trapped in the Netherrealm, his soul corrupted by Quan Chi's dark magic. There he would have remained but for the aid of his cousin Kung Jin. Together their Shaolin strength repelled the evil sufficiently enough for Kung Lao to escape that dark realm and control his inner demons. Compromised but not lost, Kung Lao now exists as an agent of vengeance. He will show evil no mercy.
