During this year's Spike TV VGA, health and gaming website GamerFitNation had a chance to interview Mortal Kombat series co-creator Ed Boon. During the interview, Ed reveals that there were many other popular horror movie icons being considered as DLC for Mortal Kombat (2011) in addition to Freddy Krueger. In particular, Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th, and Ash from the Evil Dead series.Unfortunately, they never made the cut. However, Boon revealed that had NetherRealm Studios known how popular DLC was going to be, they would've planned beyond just the four characters that were released - Skarlet, Kenshi, Rain, and as mentioned above, Freddy Krueger.
Oh well. Like the video states, there's always the next game.

I hope Jason can make a DLC appearance in the next MK game. He really fits in the MK universe. Not very fond of Ash from the Evil Dead series, though. Thanks for the info, Fuzz.

I can understand how Freddy got in.
Fighter with magical abilities. Still doesn't sit right.
Jason is Jason. He really can't or shouldn't allow to die. Him and Mileena would have a field day.
I havent played Mortal Kombat in months.
