UPDATE #2: It's official! Kratos was properly announced last night on Spike TV's VGA Awards. Check him out in the amazing debut trailer below!
On a related note, sadly Mortal Kombat did not win the Most Anticipated Game of 2011 category. UPDATE:God of War lead designer David Jaffe has pretty much konfirmed that Kratos will indeed be a guest character in Mortal Kombat (2011) on his Twitter account.
"LOVE that Kratos is in the new MK. So bummed he's not in the story portion. Heard about it from Ed at E3 this year and had to keep super mum on it but man, fucking LOVE it. He totaly fits in that world. I shit you not - on some level I feel like all the characters I work on are alive and that I have a relationship with them and I can tell you, if I know Kratos - and I do! - he's fucking LOVING his time in the MK Universe. I be he makes a shit ton of friends there. He should pull Zeus in and fucking leave his ass there!"
Once again, rumors are flying about the god of war himself, Kratos, making a guest appearance as a playable character in the PS3 version of Mortal Kombat. If you remember, the Hip Hop Gamer was claiming this all the way back at this year's E3 convention. This time, a site called The Daily Briefing is reporting that the January issue of the Official Playstation Magazine is confirming this rumor to be true.
"Thanks to the January issue of the Official Playstation Magazine, we?ve learned Kratos will be a fully featured character with Kombat moves, fatalities and his very own themed kombat arena. Unfortunately, we?ve also learned he won?t be playable in story mode. But then again, when did Kratos even need a story besides killing everyone/thing in his path."
If true, who can we expect to see in the Xbox 360 version? Master Chief? Maybe a Castle Crasher knight?!?!?
Man I could have sworn I replied to a Kratos topic last night, but now I can't find it lol
Well to repeat myself, when I first heard the announcement of Kratos being added I was rather upset and maybe because of this the possibility of the 360 getting their own exclusive character never even crossed my mind.
Someone mentioned perhaps the possibility of Marcus Fenix and Fuzz suggester perhaps it might be Master Chief or a Castle Crasher knight, however I think all 3 have a very slim possibility of being made into MK kombatants. First Marcus Fenix, I've played through the first two gears of war games and maybe I'm wrong but I never saw anything within the games that showed Fenix as the type of person who's gonna get himself into a brawl, I think he lets his guns do the talking. Gears of War is certainly a violent enough franchise for Mortal Kombat's standards but still I don't see any of the characters fitting into a fighting game. Next up is Master Chief, I really really doubt Master chief himself would make an appearance, judging from the appearance of the female spartan in dead or alive 4 (I forgot her spartan number) Microsoft or Bungie seems to me to be hesitant to want to include Master Chief himself in some other game.. so if a spartan were to appear in Mortal Kombat I think it would just be some other Spartan, however after seeing how the Spartan played in Dead or Alive 4 I have my doubts that a spartan would be placed into a fighting game again... that crap just didn't work/look right. I'm guessing the Castle crasher knight suggestion was totally just a joke, but I'm gonna think about the possibly inclusion of a knight anyways Castle Crashers is no longer a 360 exclusive so.... end of story
Perhaps someone is far more imaginative than I and has enough knowledge of 360 exclusives to think of decent possible guest characters, but I myself could not think of any. The best possible thing I can think of is since the fact that Microsoft owns Rare they could use one of the characters from the Killer Instinct series, but I really doubt this would happen. The most likely scenario in my mind is that Kratos is simply some deal WB and the MK team worked with PS3 to bring exclusive content to the console in an attempt to make it the console people are going to want to buy MK on. I mean it certainly wouldn't be the first time a console has gotten a game to provide DLC or extra content or whatever you want to call it only on one console(Assassin's Creed Brotherhood and Batman Arkham Asylum come to mind)
Man I could have sworn I replied to a Kratos topic last night, but now I can't find it lol Yep, that's my fault. I tried to combine the one from yesterday with this one and ended up screwing them both up so badly they accidently got deleted. I already apologized to the author of the original thread.
Haven't the MK team learn from there mistakes since everyone hated MK vs DCU, what are they thinking? I don't think that's necessarily true. While the hardcore MK fans may not have liked it, the game was still a commercial success. People don't buy what they don't like.
Well you actually have a good point, this is like Soul Calibur Except not as lame
now that you mention Soul Calibur, does anyone know how Spawn came to be the exclusive character for the xbox? I really don't think Microsoft owns the rights to any video game adaptation to spawn... anyways I'm just curious because I suppose Spawn would be kind of an interesting guest character for the 360 and would probably fit much better in the MK world then in the Soul Calibur world, but either way I'm hoping for no more guest characters.
does anyone know how Spawn came to be the exclusive character for the xbox? Todd McFarlane designed the Necrid character in SC2. I'm assuming that's how the idea of Spawn as a guest character came about. Since Tekken was not on the original Xbox, the PS2 version got Heihachi Mishima, and the Gamecube version was naturally going to get a Nintendo character. All that was left was the Xbox.

Yeah Fuzz your right cause MK vs DCU did sell pretty good and I did buy the game myself
From the Twitter feed of Mr. David Scott Jaffe, one of the creators of Kratos:
"@KingTavy Dude Kratos would have a FUCKALITY and fuck the SHIT out of Sonya AND Katana at the same motherfucking TIME!!!! :) "
... yeah, I seriously doubt this is exactly what MK fans were clamoring for when we celebrated a glorious return to vintage, old-school, nostalgic Mortal Kombat.
Of all the wonderful characters they COULD put in the game, from MK's own storied history of games and lore, I'll be mighty upset if some genuinely good characters like Kenshi and Fujin end up ignored while Quan Chi's stunt double is included.
I think this bald man shouldn't be in the game, shame on you NRS you promised vintage MK and you're giving us soul calibur?! I wanna see what Namco has to say about this...

yeah I bought MK vs DC as well... but I definitely did not like that game, traded it in within 2 weeks after I beat the story mode and saw all the fatalities. There were 3 majors problems I personally had with the game that I thought were the nails in the coffin. The first problem was the fact that Mortal Kombat really bent what made the franchise what it is for the sake of adding these high profile DC characters. Had I personally been able to choose the characters for the DC universe side instead of going for the big name characters such as batman or superman I would have chosen darker characters within the DC universe that really would have fit the sinister mold of the Mortal Kombat franchise rather than sacrificing for the sake of big names. The Joker was definitely one of the few characters that I thought fit perfectly within the game because of his demented personality. I do understand why they did it though... after all the inclusion of characters such as batman, the flash, superman probably did account for a large number of sales. To have made it a lasting game though I think they really should have looked at Capcom's Versus series as a source of inspiration. If you look at games like X-men vs Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter or the Marvel vs Capcom trilogy, what really made these crossovers work in my opinion is that neither franchise really had to sacrifice anything. Both the Capcom and Marvel characters were able to keep the personalities that make the characters them. Capcom was lucky and did not have to deal with a major issue that the Mortal Kombat team did, and that is death. If you had Batman kill someone in Mortal Kombat it would completely destroy the foundation his character is built on, but on the other hand when you had a character like Spiderman knockout a Capcom character like Morrigan there is no real repercussion because she is simply "knocked out" and lives to fight another day, so the entire wacky series becomes nothing more than an entertaining guest appearance by so and so character, like in the cartoons of my childhood where in one episode Spiderman may team up with the X-men to beat up so and so bad guy and then go off back into his own world without any real consequences. This is again why I believe MK vs DC really should have taken the more darker characters from its universe for the game, instead of the cop out of having I think it was called "Heroic Brutatlity" where it pretty much looked like a fatality minus the blood occur just to avoid having the characters who would never kill not break their character's personality they could have instead had characters that had no qualms killing an opponent like their MK counterparts.
The other two nails in the coffin were the close Kombat and Free fall Kombat mechanic in the game, maybe some people liked them but personally I found them to derail the momentum of a fight and after seeing the animation for the free fall 3 or 4 times I just really didn't want to have to sit through it anymore. Again this is what I personally found wrong with the game, I'm sure everyone else has their own opinions
Maybe they will change to story mode appearance. Do want to see what he'll be like, should align with Quan Chi somehow.
Can't say I really agree with that... you can't add Kratos to the story without pissing on either or both franchise's existing storyline, something I'm positive the studio behind God of War would not stand for, and probably the MK team as well. Kratos is a killing machine who has taken out many of the gods of mythology, if he were in the story he isn't exactly going to spare his opponents so him killing even one of the MK cast could and probably would derail the entire story, because with the exception of maybe a small number of the cast they all play important roles in the events that lead to Armageddon. While I understand that events will play out differently this time around because of Raiden's foresight, it would cheapen the entire experience if the inclusion of a guest character would dramatically alter the entire franchise's storyline, such as using your example of Kratos aligning with Quan chi ; Quan chi being the sneaky bastard he is tricks Kratos into doing some things with the promise that he will send Kratos back to his realm if he accomplishes the task set out for him so he can continue his quest to kill Zeus. Kratos accomplishes said task and Quan Chi attempts to betray him and so Kratos kills Quan Chi and takes Shinnok's amulet for himself. Well now you have a big dilemna, with Quan Chi dead, there will be no deadly alliance and Shinnok's amulet will be taken out of the MK universe completely... so Raiden sending a message back to himself was all just so Kratos could come kill Quan Chi. I mean yes there are plenty of other ways this could play out, but I mean why would the MK team throw themselves into this minefield when judging by the responses they have been receiving from the community they have a really good chance of bringing MK back to the popularity it once had.
Kratos, Get the hell out of here! We alreadly have a brillant bald bastard and his name is Quan Chi!!! I feel either Batman (given they wuss out like last time) or Spawn (Simmions version) have more potential. For anyone doubting Spawn's potential look up Midwood/ White Lotus's Scorpion vs. Spawn...
Honestly the constant gimmick of "guest" characters doesn't ever seem to stop in fighting games anymore, it seems that Namco is reliant on it now, I really don't want to see it done with MK. If anything, I have doubts that a Halo character would be in, it'd be too similar to the Spartan of DoA4, but perhaps some other console exclusive can make it.

I could see the 360 console exclusive being General RAAM or Marcus Fenix from Gears of War or maybe Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden
