The Blood And Thunder series focuses on one primary source of power, a book known as the Tao Te Zhan. Originally, there were many, but over the years as the power of each book was unlocked and abused, the Elder Gods destroyed them. However, the Elder Gods placed the powers of each into one book and devised a powerful spell in which was to keep the book permanently closed. In order to open the book, seven riddles needed to be answered.

Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya answered the first six riddles. However, it was Goro who answered the final riddle, granting him great power. Raiden and Shang Tsung temporarily joined forces to strip Goro of this power.
