When the Lin Kuei decided to utilize current advances in technology, they applied it directly to their warriors by creating three cybernetic ninja prototypes. The results of early experiments are unclear, but Cyrax, Sektor and Smoke were the first three ninjas to be successfully converted to cyborgs. Sektor and Cyrax volunteered for the procedure, however, Smoke was forced to undergo conversion after he tried to escape with his friend, Sub-Zero.

The Lin Kuei cyborgs were armed with a varied arsenal of weapons, ranging from electrified nets and grenades to homing missiles and flame throwers, and all possessed self-destruct mechanisms.
