Smoke
Mortal Kombat 1
Smoke first appeared as a hidden kombatant to fight against in Mortal Kombat II. He was a grey palette swap of Scorpion with smoke surrounding his body. He would often peek out from behind trees in the Living Forest, and would sometimes appear before the start of a match offering clues on how to find him.

In the official Mortal Kombat II comic by John Tobias, it was revealed that Smoke was a Lin Kuei warrior.

Smoke started out as an assassin for the Lin Kuei. He was a friend and ally of Sub-Zero. Eventually, the Lin Kuei would begin transforming their most skilled warriors into cyborgs. After seeing their fellow clansmen, Sektor and Cyrax, automated, Smoke and Sub-Zero decided to leave the Lin Kuei. Sub-Zero managed to escape, but Smoke was captured and transformed into a cyborg. Under the designation LK-7T2, Smoke was programmed to hunt down Sub-Zero.

During the events of Mortal Kombat 3, Smoke is captured by Shao Kahn's forces during his invasion of Earthrealm. Now inoperable, he was transported to Outworld as a trophy and locked away in the lower bowels of Kahn's fortress.

Years later, during the events of Mortal Kombat: Deception, Smoke would eventually be discovered by Noob Saibot. He was reactivated by Noob, and his nanotechnology immediately began repairing him. Somehow, Noob reprograms Smoke to obey only him, and turns the cyber-ninja into his ally, hoping to use his nanotechnology to one day create a legion of cyber-demons.

In Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Smoke and Noob Saibot stage an attack on the Lin Kuei temple in Arctika. He is shown to have the ability to transform humans into shadow warriors. He battles Taven but is eventually defeated. He teleports away to inform Noob of Taven's interference with their plans.

Human Form: In his human form, Smoke was a lethal assassin working for the Lin Kuei. But when they decide to automate their ninjas, Smoke is caught in the middle. He becomes a cyborg assassin. From that day forward his human form would exist as only a memory.
Same as UMK3
Left disabled in the dungeons of Shao Kahn's fortress, the cybernetic ninja Smoke has been reactivated and reprogrammed to serve Noob Saibot. His new purpose is to be used as a seed for a new form of cyborg.
Originating from Prague, Tomas Vrbada was recruited by the Lin Kuei for his impressive ability to escape capture. Able to transform into a wisp of smoke, his talent has proved useful on countless missions. Smoke has no memory of his childhood. His only family is the Lin Kuei, more specifically the younger Sub-Zero, who is like a brother to him. It has been Smoke's hope that through the Lin Kuei he will discover his past--and the origin of his power.
As a boy, Smoke lived to hunt with his family. Their final hunt, however, ended in tragedy. Having accidentally trespassed onto Lin Kuei lands, they were attacked. Smoke was orphaned.

Ashamed by his warriors' actions, the Lin Kuei's Grandmaster adopted Smoke. He raised him alongside his sons, Sub-Zero and Scorpion.

Eventually, Smoke chose to make the Lin Kuei's mission his own. But as he lacked his brothers' innate supernatural abilities, he set out to master practical magic. Having done so. he now joins them in Earthrealm's defense.

Human Form: Winning the Tournament enables Smoke to escape his artificial body. He then devotes his life to study the fighting skills of his counter part ninjas: Scorpion Sub-Zero, and Reptile. Without warning Smoke once again vanishes.

He retreats into the hidden Forest to continue his study, and will remain there until he has perfected the skills of the remaining ninjas and can compete in Mortal Kombat 4.
Before his transformation into a cybernetic ninja, Smoke was one of the Lin Kuei's finest ninjas. It was during this time that he came to know his greatest ally - Sub-Zero. When the Lin Kuei decided to automate their warriors, the two attempted to escape. While Sub-Zero successfully eluded capture, Smoke did not. He would become a robotic nightmare, his soul trapped inside a living machine. In his human form Smoke was a fierce warrior. In his mechanical body he is even more lethal. But his true form is that of a human, one he'll know again only in dreams.
With Smoke as his template. Noob Saibot planned to return to the Netherrealm and use Smoke's nanotechnology to create an army of cyborg demons. He was unaware that they were followed by someone Noob had not seen since before he become a wraith. Smoke instantly recognized their visitor. He was an echo of their past. He was Sub-Zero. Noob Saibot's brother.

Noob Saibot was surprised to see how much stronger his brother had become. If he were still Lin Kuei, still human, he would probably have shown some degree of pride. But, as Raiden had revealed during the ordeal with Shinnok's amulet, his soul had become tainted when he died at the hands of Scorpion, Noob Saibot, the original Sub-Zero, had descended into the Netherrealm free from compassion. He ordered Smoke to assist him in slaying his brother - his first act as ruler of the Netherrealm.
Smoke's power lies in his nanobot technology. Microscopic machines course through his veins, constantly repairing and altering his being. But when infused with the power of Blaze, his nanobots took on a life of their own. Multiplying at an exponential rate, they were soon numerous enough to consume Edenia, transforming the entire realm into a mass of sentient grey material that calls itself Smoke.
Shao Kahn's violent death shook the very core of Smoke's being and dislodged his earliest memories. Tomas Vrbada was only a boy when he was abducted by an obscure cult and sacrificed to a demon. Burned alive, he returned to the mortal realm as an enenra, a creature of smoke and vapor. His captors were helpless against his shapeless form as he lashed out with rage, killing them all. His murder avenged, he returned to his human form, remembering nothing of his former life. Now aware of his true identity, Smoke understands he is no mere assassin. His destiny has been revealed.
