Literally meaning "Forest Demons," the Lin Kuei clan's origin is shrouded in mystery. It was an ancient, secretive clan that operated somewhere in deep forests of Northern China many hundred years ago. Members worked as spies, assassins, and thieves for the benefit of the clan.

Many of its members were know to have special powers. Sub-Zero's lineage was know to possess kori powers, which was a mastery over cold and the ability to create ice. He could freeze enemies and create weapons of ice instantly. Smoke also had an unusual gift, which enabled him to transform into a cloud of smoke. A useful trick that aided him in many missions.

After the events of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Sub Zero and Sektor battled for control of the Lin Kuei. Sub-Zero defeated Sektor and claimed the title of Grand Master. He vowed to Raiden that he would use his new authority to reform the Lin Kuei as a force for good and aid in the protection of Earthrealm.

A short time later, Sub-Zero relocated the Lin Kuei to a remote location in the arctic, where he had discovered an ancient temple frozen in the side of a glacier. Here, the Lin Kuei could operate without any threat from rival clans.
